Day 55: Tejakula to Ubud II
This post is the second set of pictures from our journey from Tejakula to Ubud. The first is [here][tejakula-to-ubud-i].
After Pura Bratan, the second high-profile tourist site we visited were the rice terraces at Jatiluwih. These are rightly famous and are truly incredible in person.
Now, we come from a green land. The little slice of country in the Pacific Northwest between the mountains and the ocean contain both near-rainforest climates and actual temperate rainforest. Moisture scraped from thousands of miles of Pacific Ocean is sprinkled abundantly on us for most of the year. Seattle is not called the emerald city because of any great wizard. So it takes a lot of greenery to impress us.
Jatiluwih impressed us mightily.
The landscape is like an unmade bed: sheets all crinkled up. The sides of the hills are terraced for rice, giving it a distinctly Minecraft-like look. Rice in all stages of growth and the surrounding forests paint the scene with every imaginable green. The distant mountains and churning clouds complete the awesome spectacle.
The circular trail was well worth the 30000 Rupiah. We somehow got lost in it despite it being a loop.

Landscape with very Young Rice
Newly-planted rice on these terraces. Note the amazingly steep hillsides and how little land is not under rice.

Two Workers Scoot by and Smile
Still smiling after a long day of work. Smiling after we get out of their way on the road at least.
Varied Grade of the Terraces
Some gently sloping, some following step hills all the way down.

Rice Terraces
The rice terraces are amazingly open and painstakingly follow the contours of the terrain.
Dramatic Clouds over the Rice Terraces
Near sundown and the clouds were churning over the mountains
Rice Terrace Farmers Weeding their Crop
These workers were weeding the fields by pulling up weeds then stomping them down into the mud to drown them.
